Heerenveen will begin their KNVB Cup campaign away to amateur side Excelsior Maassluis. The draw for the first round paired the Eredivisie club with the third-division team, with the match scheduled for 27, 28 or 29 October.
The fixture holds special significance for Excelsior Maassluis coach Geert Arend Roorda. "The meeting is especially special for coach Geert-Arend Roorda, who was born in Heerenveen and was under contract with the professional club for five years," he said. Roorda played for Heerenveen between 2005 and 2010.
This is a repeat of a cup tie from 2019, which Heerenveen won 0-3. Excelsior Maassluis defeated Excelsior Rotterdam in the first round last season before falling to Ajax in the next round.
For Heerenveen, who sit 10th in the Eredivisie with 9 points from 7 games, the cup follows an important 0-4 away win at Sparta Rotterdam. The team's recent form reads one win, two draws and two defeats from their last five league matches. The full standings are available online.
First comes an away league fixture against PSV Eindhoven on 9 October. After that, the squad can focus on the cup and securing a place in the next round. The lineup and squad for that match will be confirmed later.
